How To Bet MLB Baseball

There are several types of bets that you can make when you wager on America’s pastime. Here are the baseball bets that you can make.

Moneylines

The moneyline is the most basic and popular baseball bet. You simple have to pick one team to win and you do not have to deal with any point spread, but there are different odds for each team with how bookies think what team is the underdog and what team is the favorite. A moneyline bet will look like this:

Atlanta Braves +150
New York Mets -160

The + signifies the underdog and the – signifies the favorite. In this example you would have to bet $16 to win $10 on the Mets and bet $10 to win $15 0n the Braves.

Totals

Totals bets let you bet on the total runs that will be scored by both teams in a game. You can either bet Over or Under the posted amount of runs for the game. For the totals bet to be valid the game has to go the entire 9 innings. An example of a totals bet would look like this:

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox O/U 8.5.

Generally in totals bets you will get odds of -110. Using this example if you bet the Over the combined score of both teams have to be at least 9 runs and conversely if you bet the Under the combined score of both teams had to be fewer then 9 runs.

Runlines

A runlines bet comes up wit ha spread for a game. Many sportsbooks offer a favorite with -1.5 runs and the underdog getting +1.5 runs. There are some sportsbooks that will offer runlines to the tune of -2.5/+2.5, but there are not many out there. Basically, in a runlines bet you are either getting an extra 1.5 runs by betting on the underdog and giving 1.5 runs by betting on the favorite.

Parlays

Parlays are also called multiples are a way that you can win a significant payout, however while the risk is not great the parlay bet is a hard one to win. A parlay bet is betting on 2 or more teams and all the teams you bet on have to win the game. You get much better odds with more teams in the parlays bet.

Propositions (prop bets)

A prop bet is some thing that generally does not have to do with the outcome of the game, such as how many strikeouts are in a game, which pitcher will have the most strikeouts, team to score first, and certain team to score Over/Under a certain amount of runs. The bigger the sportsbook and the game is the more prop bets will be available. There will be different odds for each prop bet.

Futures

Futures bets let you either pick a player or team to do something for the entire season. You can make futures bets throughout the season, but the odds will change as the season progresses. Some examples of future bets are which team will win a division, pennant, or the World Series, and which player will hit the most home runs, which pitcher will win the most games, or which player will win the MVP or Cy Young. You can lock up good odds by making futures bets in the beginning of the year.
